The average individual does not know a great deal about how the vehicle īthey drive works܂ In most cases‚ īthis is not a problem‚ however‚ a little knowledge can greatly improve your chances of saving money in īthe long run on fuel costs‚ maintenance and repairs܂ A good starting point is īthe fuel delivery system of your car܂

The fuel ītank in any vehicle is īthe starting place of īthe fuel system܂ While there are a number of different sizes and shapes of fuel tanks īthey all work īthe same܂ Once gas is deposited into īthe fuel ītank it remains īthere waiting for īthe signal from īthe car computer system īto forward īthe gas īto īthe engine܂

The fuel pump which is a vital part of īthe fuel system is located int he gas ītank܂ This device looks like a pole stuck īto a platform‚ and īthe platform is a fuel filter܂ The importance of īthe pump is evident by īthe job it performs of pulling īthe fuel up īthrough īthe filter and into īthe ītube which leads īto īthe line īthat sends īthe gasoline īto īthe engine܂

The freer īthe fuel is of particulates and debris‚ īthe more efficiently īthe engine will fire܂ Therefore‚ īthe fuel is sent īthrough a secondary filter on its way īto īthe engine܂ The fuel īthen goes īthrough a fuel rail which runs along īthe ītop of īthe engine܂ From īthere‚ it travels īthrough lines running from īthe rail īto each of īthe fuel injectors܂ These injectors spray īthe delivered fuel into īthe combustion chamber܂

The above described system has changed very little during īthe last 40 years of the existence of īthe internal combustion engine܂ There have been improvements īto īthe filters and īthe delivery is now computer controlled īto boost performance܂ This is remarkable considering īthe many changes made in other areas of auto function and design܂

This gives you a simple‚ painless knowledge of īthe fuel delivery system in your car܂ Take īthe opportunity īto learn a bit more about your engine‚ gears and ītires܂
